Scientific Management Of Zoo Animals

We Help in Scientific Management Of Zoo Animals As Per The Guidelines of Central Zoo Authority (CZA) of India

To maintain self-sustaining, genetically and behaviourally viable populations of animals for maintaining a gene pool that may to be used for long-term conservation of threatened species and to encourage visitors for National efforts towards wildlife conservation,

We, in line with SOPs and guidelines of CZA for long-term conservation of threatened species and regular monitoring of various parameters for scientific management of animals, offer following management plans in response to the selected CZA mandates and rules as per our current expertise and abilities.

Animal Health monitoring

Periodic screening of Zoo animals for parasitic, bacterial and viral infections

  1. Faecal matter parasitic load screening of animals at an interval of 3 Months.
  2. Diagnosis of viral/ bacterial/ fungal/ other diseases at an interval of 6 Months or on recommendations of the Veterinary Officer.

Genetic Management of Zoo Animals

We analyse Nuclear & Mitochondrial DNA data for Individual/ Population of Zoo Animal species which can help in

  1.  Conservation Breeding -  Individuals with excess genetic heterozygosity can be marked and used for Selective breeding and Animal exchange programs.
  2.  Knowledge of Genetic purity and Inbreeding status of population of a Species.
  3. Developing Genetic IDs of each Zoo animal to help in dealing with Illegal Wildlife Trade.

Proper Rehabilitation of Rescued Animals

We help in proper Rehabilitation of a Rescued animal through the identification of a Genetically colsest population for its release.

Quality Check of food for Zoo Animals

We do Screening of animals food, water and other suspected material for Species/ Sex, infectious and zoonotic diseases

Age Estimation to Help in Zoo Management

We have developed the age estimation methods for Lion, Tiger, and Spotted Deer through Cementum Annuli Analysis of Root of a Tooth, and can estimate for other Mammalian Species. The Non-Invasive Age Estimation of an Animal in Zoo can help the Management in following ways

Help Decide Best Age for Reproduction

Correct Age Help to Decide the Best Age for Reproduction

Appropriate Care as per Age

Exact age ensures that an Animal receives  appropriate care which are dietry & medical needs specific to that age group.

Assesment of Population Demographics

Correct age enable authorities to monitor population Demographics and the Sucess of Conservation Programs.  The body weight & age of mammals have been found directly correlated with their habitat conditions.

Our Research Collaborators The Wildlife Analytical Laboratories (DeerAge) in Missoula, MT, USA have developed the Demographic data for Average Age & Percentage of Whitetail Deer for each State.

Planning of long term Welfare of Animals

Exact age helps in planning of long term welfare of Animals as older ones may require special care and accomodations.

Our Research Collaborators

DeerAge is a world leader in providing forensic aging of deer and other mammals using the cementum a
